On Monday 23 November 2026 at the ICRC Geneva, GBI will host a timely discussion between our Senior Advisor, Gerald Pachoud and President and Co-founder of Shift, Caroline Rees.
Fifteen years on from the UNGPs, companies have human rights policies, due diligence systems, specialist teams, many companies have board oversight and, more and more, legal obligations. Things that were fairly normal in 2011 are now much harder to defend. But has any of that really changed what companies decide when human rights collide with commercial interests, geopolitical pressures or tough operating environments? Can a company have excellent HRDD and still make bad calls? Has the professionalisation of our field changed corporate behaviour, or has it sometimes just made companies better at showing they have processes? And have we spent too much time asking whether companies have the right systems, and not enough asking what those systems actually make them do differently?
